Step into the legendary world of Ancient Greece with my latest hand-drawn map, The 12 Labors of Heracles. Following the success of my Odyssey map,
I wanted to dive deeper into the life of Greece’s most iconic hero, capturing not just his famous trials but the epic scale of his journey.

The Map
The Creative Process
Like my previous works, this map began with humble pencil sketches. Each of the twelve labors was individually illustrated by hand before being digitally redrawn,
vectorized, and painted. For me, these projects are more than just art, they are a way to refresh and expand my own knowledge of these classic legends.
The character designs were inspired by the iconic black-figure and red-figure pottery of ancient Greece, blending historical vase painting styles with my own art.

Challenges and Decisions
Deciding on the borders of this map was a massive challenge. Heracles’ adventures took him to the very ends of the known world, including a journey toward the
edge of the Atlantic (near modern day Gibraltar). To capture this "world's end" feeling without losing the focus on the Mediterranean heartland, I used a dreamlike cloud transition to illustrate these distant travels. I hope it conveys that sense of a long, weary journey into the unknown!

While I managed to include several important episodes from his life beyond the 12 Labors, some of my favorite stories-like the freeing of Prometheus in the Caucasus Mountains or the wrestling match with the giant Antaeus, sadly fell outside the physical boundaries of the map. It’s always a tough call to leave such exciting events out, but it keeps the composition focused on the core of his legend.

Details to Look Out For
Characters: Drawing the triple-bodied giant Geryon was a unique technical challenge, but my personal favorite is Cerberus, I truly enjoyed bringing the three-headed guardian of the Underworld to life.
